Description

Pictured here is the beautiful Messier 61 galaxy that lies approximately 55 milion light years from Earth. I captured only 3.5 hours worth of images on the galaxy using a PlaneWave Instruments CDK600 from ObsTech in Chile. Astronomers recently discovered a bright new shining star within this galaxy, which imploded upon itself in a massive fashion called a supernova. When large stars grow old they have so much mass and energy that instead of just fading they explode with millions of times the energy produced in a nuclear bomb. The result is an object 100 million times more bright than our Sun. (PlaneWave Instruments CDK600 and FLI Proline 16803. Luminance 9x10 min subs and RGB 3x10 min subs).
